As shoppers around the country scrambled to find in-store deals on televisions, toys, and electronics, people in the states where marijuana has been legalized were making purchases of a greener variety as holiday shopping kicked into high gear on Black Friday.
Sales of marijuana were up 3% at the start of Black Friday weekend, market intelligence platform Headset found — and states like Nevada, which are observing their first ever Black Friday since the drug was legalized, saw even bigger boosts.
One store in Las Vegas offered an eighth of select flower products — marijuana plants for smoking — for $35, down from the usual price of $53, and another, Reef Dispensary, added on one free 10-pack of fruit chew edibles per customer with any purchase. In Washington, one dispensary called Green Theory offered sales on dispensers, cartridges, and marijuana. Adrian Sedlin, chief executive officer of luxury marijuana startup Canndescent speculated that there would be even higher sales around the holidays in the future.
“With cannabis coming out of prohibition, a number of whole new social rituals are being defined by the public,” he said. “I think we will get to a point where gifting cannabis during the holidays is more acceptable than gifting a bottle of wine.”
Sales this year actually saw a much bigger spike before Thanksgiving, as cannabis users stocked up for the munchies-friendly holiday. The drug saw a 20% increase in sales in the Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday leading up to the holiday compared to an average week in October or November, according to Headset. Cy Scott, chief executive officer of Headset, said the impact of Black Friday sales on the cannabis market isn’t huge yet, but the firm anticipates the trend to strengthen as California moves to recreational, adult-use cannabis in 2018.”
If you live in a state where marijuana is legal, remember you can get deals online, too. California cannabis lube company Foria was selling products at 40% off for Black Friday and Wood & Glass of California was selling its handmade bongs and other weed products for 20% off. Most companies require customers to input their marijuana medical card to order online.
